Chapter

Twelve

I was hoping to make it to Denver, but when we reached Sterling, we only had an hour until sunrise. So, it was best we stopped there for the day. The city was quiet at that time of night, and I felt much more in control with that cold blood that Ax had gotten for me in my veins.

When I heard him walking the wide street behind me, I smiled at myself. He’d kept away the entire night as we ran in the fields and the highways, staying away from cities and towns as much as we could. So far, no trouble, which I counted as a blessing. If everything went the same tonight, I’d be in Arizona, and practically a free woman.

Right now, Ax didn’t want to be near me because he knew what would happen if we talked again. We would do what we always did—fight, talk dirty until I got wet and he got hard, and then one of us would walk away because we had someplace to get to.

Except now.

We just needed to find a motel or an inn, and there was no other place to go for the rest of the day. There’d be a bed. We’d end up fucking each other’s brains out, no doubt. And I was already looking forward to it. Being away from him for a month had been torture, but I’d managed because I hadn’t had to actually see him, feel him, have him touch me the way only he knew how, listen to that sexy voice of his. But now that we were close to each other, it was worse. I craved him worse than blood.

“Let’s stop here for the day,” I said to the night, knowing he’d hear me.

“We still have an hour,” he said from behind me.

I turned around, and he stopped walking, still ten feet away. “Afraid I’ll bite?” I said with a grin.

He raised a brow. “Afraid I’ll make you throw away those panties again.”

I laughed. I had put on a new pair of panties as soon as I cooled off, and of course he’d smelled them on me. “You’ll just carry them around in your pocket, too.” And I winked.

He sighed, shaking his head, as if he had already given up. “And you’ll need water to clean yourself up.”

“Your tongue does a much better job at that.”

“My tongue stays in my mouth.”

Now, I was intrigued. Folding my arms in front of my chest, I smiled. “What are you gonna do—stay away from me until sunrise?”

“Precisely,” he said, then continued walking.

“Are you serious?” Because he couldn’t possibly be.

But he walked right past me, looking ahead like I wasn’t even there.

“Ax!”

“There’s a hotel over there. Let’s get to it. We need the rest.” And he didn’t look back at me at all.

“Fine,” I muttered, and with the stupid plastic bag in my hand, I followed him to the hotel. He didn’t actually mean it—he was just bluffing. He’d change his mind as soon as we were alone.
